  My Special Day
One of my wishes has been to see close up a Harrier Jet Aeroplane. It is always a pleasant surprise when one can achieve one’s wishes. This happened to me in March this year when out of the blue I received an invitation to do just this.
I was treated to a wonderful day, by lovely gentlemen and ladies who had, in some way, been associated with the Harrier aeroplane. This aeroplane can add to our country’s achievement in aviation.
It can be marked down as a success similar to the “Wright brothers” 1903 first powered flight, and the design of the Hurricane and Spitfire. It served us well during the 1982 South Atlantic conflict.
I am very thankful to all for making this day such a memorable one. To view the aeroplane was magnificent. To sit in the cockpit was unforgettable.
There was also another treat in store for me. As I had never had the opportunity to fly on ‘Concorde’, it was good to be able to view it and board it, even if grounded. I was escorted on to this magnificent aeroplane by one of its pilots, and shown the instruments and workings.
Yet another memorable experience was on May 11 when I was invited on board the HMS Illustrious, moored
on the Thames, to view the 70th “Channel Dash” of the Swordfish Aircraft. The day ended perfectly with an evening at the Captain’s Cocktail Party.
May I express my thanks to all who contributed in making my wish come true, and also for the kind hospitality extended to me. The gifts I received will be enjoyed and treasured. It is a day I will remember forever.
Never in the field of human enjoyment has so much been owed to so many.

BSc (Hons) in Defence Health Care Studies
The Programme is delivered at one of the largest Universities in the country; Birmingham City University has around 25,000 students spread across 8 learning campuses and 6 Faculties. DHE is located within the South Campus, Edgbaston.
Our programme has a philosophy that seeks to inform and develop Defence Health Care practice, built upon the sound foundations of academic enquiry. The programme aims to prepare defence healthcare professionals for their diverse role by focusing on the operational environment. Modules are targeted to focus on the most common areas of practice whilst offering a varied platform for on-going professional development. Interest in research is encouraged throughout the programme and many of the modules ask students to analyse their own working practices.
Modules of study have been designed to meet the needs of a modern armed service, tailored to individual’s needs by relating to their actual working environment. To this end, modules
focus on all aspects of defence healthcare including: professionalism, governance and leadership; acute, primary and secondary care as well as prevention of illness and promotion of health. We support students looking to enhance both their academic and professional development.
All our staff are dedicated to providing educational excellence in a wide range of military health care
disciplines. DHE staff are all qualified lecturers, drawn from a diverse range of clinical backgrounds; we work in collaboration with the wider Defence Medical Services to ensure we deliver the most contemporary education. We are also able to support and encourage those who wish to embark on a career within teaching and education. Programme Director Maj O’Grady and the team.
