Growing back in time...
Bygone issues of the Allotment & Leisure Gardener magazine
Looking back 15 years to issue 3, 2001...
It is easy to look back at copies from
over 10 years ago and think wow, how much the general style of the magazine has changed. It was still predominantly black and white throughout and the articles could be quite long with few or
no photos accompanying them. One may ick through and think that some articles may have been a little ‘hard going’ to read through to the end but one feeling stands out when you read through and that is a strong sense of passion and community which you still feel in the magazine of today.
The letters page called ‘you write’ lls a
double page spread with many responding
to articles and letters from the previous
edition so you get a sense of conversation
on various topics over the year. This feature
has almost disappeared from the current magazine. It isn’t that readers are not as interested; quite the contrary, as the readership has increased signi cantly in the past 15 years, it’s just that times have changed.
Letters, well ‘comments’, are now received mainly in the form of emails (thankfully, says the person that had to type the ones
received in the post!) and often come in the form of tips and snippets. Readers have also realised over the years that they can contribute to their magazine. We don’t have ‘select writers’, and so we now gratefully receive more regional articles
than ever.
Following on from the slug related front cover featured in the last
report of ‘Growing back in time...’, we have a wonderful slug related poem to entertain you!
A very informative and still current report on Garden Bon res that is too big to feature in its entirety, but did you know where the word
bon re derives from? The article states, ‘the bon re gets its name from
the medieval bon- re of animal bones’. Wikipedia of today states:
‘A bon re or bale re is a large controlled outdoor re made from
bales of straw or wood. The word is believed to come from “bone re”. In the time of the Celts,
there were midsummer festivals where animal
bones were burnt to ward off evil spirits.’ https://simple.
