JOINT SERVICE MOUNTAIN TRAINING CENTRE
Major (MAA) R Reid RAPTC
The Joint Service Mountain Training Centre (JSMTC) continues to grow and develop in all areas and although our delivery of the technical skills has always remained first class, our focus over the past 2-years has been driven towards the developmental aspect (why do we do AT) of our delivery. No need to worry, we aren’t going to start throwing away of all of climbing, kayaking and mountaineering equipment as we still need this to deliver the climbing instructors, mountain leaders and ski instructors that Defence requires us to train. The developmental skills, referred to as ‘Leadership Development Training (LDT)’ is being threaded into our normal course delivery at all levels (foundation, leader and instructor). We have however developed a LDT course that we deliver over a period of 3 days; primarily this is a ‘train the trainer’ course designed for our instructor cohort, so not available to the wider Service audience (at the moment), more to follow. The
article listed below has been written by Dr Samantha McElligott and Maj Al Seaton (OC JSMTW Llanrwst) who are our LDT SMEs. Their article explains all you need to know.
These MBS notes are also my very last words from a JSMTC perspective having completed 4-years in this role, I tried squeezing another 2-years but it wasn’t an option!!!!. OC Trg JSMTC has been a very memorable and rewarding appointment and one that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those personnel within JSMTC (past and present) that have supported me over the past 4-years. JSMTC remains a fantastic organisation, a market leader in all respects, and every member of the entire team (military and civilian, instructors, clerks, stores, drivers, chefs and cleaners) are an absolute credit; thank you.
