The last twelve months has seen many changes within the RAPTC cross country appointments with Capt Colin Paton REME handing the reins over to WO2 (QMSI) Russell Hughes who has taken over as RAPTC cross country male secretary, SSgt (SSI) Aaron Woodman taking over as the RAPTC senior male captain and Sgt (SI) Lisa Bowen taking over responsibility as the female secretary. Our focus was to build on the success from last year and drive the sport forward within the wider RAPTC. Still guiding the way with his experience and determination Capt (MAA) Joe Foreshew for the male team and WO1(SMI) Kelly Haniver giving support to the newly positioned female cross-country secretary.
The 27th Army Inter Corps Cross Country Championships took place on Wed 27 Feb 19 at SPTA Trg Area C NN Crossing on the Bulford Road hosted by the REME under Sgt (SI) Alex Rees RAPTC and his AAPTIs.
Due to injuries and work commitments the RAPTC team members changed on a regular basis up until the race day making it stressful for the secretaries. It was great to see so many new RAPTCIs taking part in the race and supporting all 4 RAPTC teams on the day.
SSgt (SSI) “Coach” Carter, SSgt (SSI) Craig Morton, SSgt (SSI) Daniel Woolridge, WO2 (QMSI) David Beresford, SSgt (SSI) Rob Davis, Sgt (SI) Kim Bowling and Sgt (SI) Danny Grenier all making their first appearance for the RAPTC cross country team.
It was great to see some old faces returning to wear the black and red vest such as SSgt (SSI) Andy Briggs, SSgt (SSI) Mickey Combe, SSgt (SSI) Woodman and WO2 (QMSI) Daz Farrugia, WO2 (QMSI) Issy Menzies, WO2 (QMSI) Vickey Blackburn and SSgt (SSI) Gemma Spence.
The day will also go down in history as it was recorded as the hottest day on record, reaching a grand total of 22 degrees. The 6-mile male course and 4-mile female course produced some dazzling individual performances with SSgt (SSI) Woodman finishing 8th overall and 1st RAPTCI, followed by SSgt (SSI) Mickey Combe placing 18th becoming 1st Veteran (VET) male. It was great to SSgt (SSI) Andy Briggs returning back from injury finishing 37th. Also, WO2 (QMSI) Daz Farrugia who represented the Army a few weeks before, picking up 3rd male VET in the race. WO1 (SMI) Kelly Haniver finishing 1st VET female with SSgt (SSI) Shan Morgan finishing 2nd VET female.
In the team positions the RAPTC senior males finished 4th overall, RAPTC VET male finished 3rd overall, RAPTC female finished 6th with the RAPTC female VETs finishing 1st.
Furthermore, the RAPTC athletes have also had a busy racing 12 months with WO1 (SMI) Kelly Haniver and WO2 (QMSI) Russ Hughes representing the Army in the Inter Services half marathon and 10km championships, SSgt (SI) Mickey Combe being selected for the 10km championships, SSgt (SI) Rob Davies who came 14th in the Snowdonia marathon, SSgt (SSI) Aaron Woodman running 3 marathons and running a pb of 2.32 in Dublin. Capt (MAA) Joe Foreshew, SSgt (SSI) Aaron Woodman, WO2 (QMSI) Daz Farrugia and WO1 (SMI) Kelly Haniver all representing the Army at the Inter Services Cross Country Championships.
In the coming weeks WO2 (QMSI) Rus Hughes, SSgt (SSI) Mickey Combe, SSgt (SSI) Craig Morton and WO1 (SMI) Kelly Haniver all been selected to represent the Army in the Virgin London Marathon 2019.
Using the momentum from this year the RAPTC cross country is in excellent shape and growing in strength every year. If you would like to get involved within the RAPTC cross country, regardless of your ability, please contact:
