LIFE AFTER THE CORPS: A CAREER IN THE FILM INDUSTRY
Mark Dorée
The transition from the Corps into the film industry has been a great experience and very memorable, from working on major film sets to being on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, to working with Paloma Faith on her latest music video.
I started working in Madrid as part of the security/medical team for an international film festival and quickly became the event manager for the London, Nice, Madrid, Berlin, Amsterdam, Milan and in 2020 Mexico and Japan film festivals. The extensive organisational skills I learned in the Corps helped enormously with event management. One of my highlights was presenting the Berlin International film festival.
Life couldn’t be better and the transition from military to the film industry was far easier than I expected. Serving within the Corps has given me a can-do attitude to anything that was handed to me and the same applies with the film industry.
The fact you are always on call to help any producers or directors with their latest production is really exciting, but in my experience never book time off unless the money is in the bank. I recently was
asked to put together a team to go out to South America for a 7-week shoot in the jungle with access only by helicopter or boat. After 4 months working with various agencies getting doctors, boats and climbers on standby the film never happened and it’s something you have to get used to.
Filming of any type is exciting but expect a long day, you are on set for a minimum of 12 hours and depending on budgets catering can be really bad or really good! On my first film I diagnosed seven people with food poisoning, and we had to stop filming for 2 days which hugely cost the production company.
My company The Movie Medics www.themoviemedics.com work with producers from around the world and now we have started running our own Film and Television first aid courses, the Corps has inspired me to succeed in everything I do and will do. There is life outside the Corps but it’s hard work, wherever you are in your career our motto ‘Mens Sana in Corpore Sano” will take you to the next level, for me it’s back to training, filming and a new project working with an Amsterdam producer mentoring teenagers in the film industry.
