in the field. The need to be time efficient when digging in to ensure hot meals
can be enjoyed when sticking to very
strict light discipline was quickly realised. Basically: move fast, champion teamwork, and embrace the ‘concurrent activity at all levels’ rule! Unfortunately for ZAB forces, the driving rain and strong winds did not dampen our platoon’s morale. Successfully completing our first platoon attack, “Attack, Suppress, Reserve’” became an unofficial Dettingen Company motto and we all worked as a team to achieve our main effort: strike ZAB forces where it would hit them hardest! A key lesson from this time - never ask how many hours we will need to dig for.

Bolstered by passing Module B and
with smiles still intact, we moved onto the next stage of our training with Module C. With the recent revision of the CCS course leading to an extension of time in the field, we were able to experience an increased number of command appointments and have our leadership skills more rigorously tested. With multiple platoon attacks rolling throughout each day, our night recce skills and field skills were tested over the week spent on Hankley Common on Ex WAVELL’S WARRIOR. Coincidentally, it also presented an exciting opportunity for Officer Cadets to try to grow gills in the field with Storm Debi
delivering lashings of horizontal rain from the moment we stepped off the bus until an hour after End Ex was called!
It was under the calm and collected direction of our Platoon Commander, OCdt Pearson, that we were led into the field and began to operate more effectively as a team and demonstrate effective soldiering skills as a company. With the rising water level
in our harbour area making many cadets question if they had mistakenly joined the Navy, full Goretex for section attacks was made acceptable attire by Permanent Staff (however, admittedly, it did take away some of the stealth factor as we sounded like a hoard of soggy crisp packets being blown
