MODULE 12
Emergency First Aid at Work

 TREATMENT OF BLEEDING
• Put on disposable gloves
• Expose and examine the wound
• Apply direct pressure with your fingers or palm, preferably over a sterile dressing or non-fluffy clean pad
(you can ask your casualty to apply this pressure)
• Elevate and support the injured part (for wounds that are not catastrophic)
• Help the casualty to lie down and raise the legs if you suspect shock
If further bleeding occurs, apply a second dressing on top of the first.
If blood seeps through both, then remove both dressings, and apply a new dressing, making sure that pressure is applied accurately at the point of bleeding.
Monitor them and call for an ambulance.
