Trust in Food Systems
Status Update and Recommendations
Board Priority
Build trust in food sytems.
Board Goal
By December 31, 2020, we will help build trust in food systems through consumer-focused partnerships, and with the targeted utilization of the FARM Science Lab to grow student and teacher agricultural awareness by 10%.
Assigned Staff Team: Tonia Ritter (Lead), Sarah Pion, Kate Thiel, Hannah Meyers, Steve Paradiso, Sidney Hill, Amelia Miller, Theresa Sisung and Michelle Blodgett.
1. By December 2020, the FARM Science Lab, as a part of the Michigan Agriculture in the Classroom program, will reach more than 35,000 students, 1,000 educators and obtain at least 45 earned media placements for the family of companies.
a. Have FARM Science Lab 2 school-ready by June 14, 2019. Completed.
b. Refine volunteer engagement and screening requirements by August 15, 2019. Completed. c. Reach Goal. Completed.
a. Totals Program to date:
i. Total Students: 54,489 ii. Total Educators: 2,338
d. Media Goal. Completed.
2. By December 2020, engage more than 1,500 educators with the Michigan Ag in the Classroom resources and at least 250 educators with at least 1 hour of professional development using agriculturally accurate resources.
a. Add 5 new offerings per year to the Michigan AITC online store. Completed.
b. Continue to work with State FFA sponsorship of the #SpeakAg Award for chapters. Completed.
c. Explore opportunities to offer Continuing Education Credits to teachers who participate in our professional development activities. Completed.
d. Participate in Professional Development Institute with Michigan Association of Agriscience Educators at least once each year. Completed.
e. By September 2019, explore and identify potential online platforms for continued engagement with classrooms remotely as an added value subscription through Michigan Ag in the Classroom. In progress/ may take a different approach.
f. By September 2020, launch Michigan Ag in the Classroom remote subscription program for classrooms to have ongoing engagement with Michigan Ag in the Classroom. In progress/may take a different approach.
g. By September 2020, host a teacher professional development event for Michigan Ag in the Classroom, leveraging teacher connections established through the FARM Science Lab outreach. Completed.
i. Focused on teacher PD for our FARM Science Lab Regional Educators in 2018 and 2019.
ii. Presented at Michigan Science Teachers’ Association and Michigan Reading Association, MAAE and MDARD PD.
iii. Combined teacher professional development with IQ Hub. December 10, 2019. iv. Several educator PDs were scheduled for 2020; either canceled or postponed.
