CARLA’S DIY PANELLING
YOU WILL NEED
Sandpaper | MDF | strong adhesive filler | caulk | primer | paint
METHOD
Sand any existing imperfections on the wall to create a smooth finish.
Decide how wide and deep you would like the MDF pieces to be. We used a 70mm width and a 9mm depth.
Decide how many panels you would like horizontally across the width of your wall. We chose four panels, using five vertical strips of MDF, totalling 350mm.
USE THE FOLLOWING FORMULA:
Width of wall
- Total width of vertical strips (350mm) + Number of desired panels (4)
= Width between vertical strips
List or draw out all the required pieces for cutting. We roughly marked the wall to get an idea of how it would look. Once we had confirmed all the measurements, we got the MDF cut at B&Q.
Stick the MDF pieces to the wall with adhesive, starting with the parameter and then move on to the vertical strips.
Fill in the gaps between the MDF strips with filler and sand until smooth.
Caulk all the gaps between the MDF and the wall.
Prime all the woodwork.
Coat the panelled section of the wall with two coats of paint in the desired colour.

Panelling can elevate a space, turning a plain, boring wall into something far more luxurious without looking too busy. The great news, too, is that as far as DIY projects go, it’s probably easier than wallpapering. We spoke to Carla Courtney, a Harron Homes customer and interiors Instagrammer. She’s recently panelled her dressing room and wants to share her easy process.
