If you’re not a professional decorator, the thought of wallpapering may fill you with dread. But fear not, here are our top tips to create a striking feature wall in your home and there’s not a trestle table in sight.
CONTEMPORARY COLOUR
BLOCKING
Not only great for creating a bold feature, colour blocking can help to define spaces in your home, particularly in open plan living spaces and kitchen/ diners. From painting whole areas in one colour in contrast to another, to experimenting with geometric shapes to frame a particular feature such as a bed or a cosy reading nook, colour blocking can transform your four walls.
TIP Always invest in some proper paint-blocking tape to ensure crisp edges to your paintwork.
WRITING’S ON THE WALL
Painting part or even a whole wall in chalk board paint not only adds a dramatic statement but acts as a fun and practical feature to your home. In the kitchen, a chalk board wall is great for ‘To Do’ and shopping lists and in a child’s bedroom it’s perfect for doodling and little messages.
TIP If a black chalk board wall is to bold for your taste, try white board paint for a more subtle colour palette, but with the same function.
SHELF LIFE
Having all your items on display is not to everyone’s taste but open shelving is a really popular trend in interiors right now. In the kitchen, pots and pans, crockery, mason jars and fresh herbs and can be displayed for easy access, while in the living
room open shelving can house your TV and devices, surrounded by books or ornaments.
TIP Why not create colour story with your books, adding a pop of colour to a neutral interior.
GO FOR THE GALLERY
A gallery wall is a collection of prints, artwork and photos installed across either a whole wall or a specific section. It is a lovely way to create a feature that is completely personal to you. Decide whether you want an orderly grid structure or a more abstract placement and choose a theme to tie it all together, such as monochrome or botanical.
TIP Mix it up by using both traditional and contemporary frames that complement one another.
