Support on land and sea
The company comprises two divisions, one providing offshore support, the other offering services onshore. Combined, the two divisions assist with everything from hauling supplies to clearing customs to feeding and housing oilfield workers.
As a worldwide shipping agent, Marítima Internacional certifies vessels and issues navigation permits. As a customs agent, it assists in the importation and exportation of any type of specialized equipment, from screw-ups to rigs, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Its maintenance crews service vessels, dikes, and other marine equipment. Clients who perform their own maintenance can take advantage of the company’s rental equipment, including crew boats, PSVs, multipurpose vessels, and jackups, as well as private jets and helicopters for clients in need of a faster mode of elite transportation.
Marítima Internacional can also assist customers with multimodal cargo movement, including cargo requiring the use of offshore cranes. It provides water supplies to offshore rigs, as well as dry storage, refrigeration, and office containers. Its commodities department can supply barite, silver, and iron ore.
If the service provider does not have something, it offers procurement assistance to help clients get what they need. And while much of the work it does involves massive machines and heavy lifting, some of the biggest impacts the company makes might go unnoticed to the average observer—but not to the employees working on the offshore rigs.
Marítima Internacional is involved at every level of crew management. It provides immigration support services to help recruit and retain a diverse global workforce. When crews change over, the firm provides the transportation to get the workers in and out. It also offers workers transportation well beyond ports, and even internationally. Offshore oil workers stay in the company’s hotels and other temporary housing and enjoy its catered meals. Other services include legal consultations, flagging of vehicles, and intermediary services with the Mexican government.
Corporate cohesion
Part of the reason Marítima Internacional is able to offer such expansive services is that it is part of a larger firm, Grupo Marítimo M, a global leader in integrated port and maritime solutions. In addition to Marítima Internacional, Grupo Marítimo M’s other companies are Marinetech S.A. de C.V. and JB del Golfo.
Marinetech S.A. de C.V. specializes in providing shipping services to the oil industry, delivering cargo and personnel to clients at ports throughout the Gulf of Mexico. The company operates a fleet of six supply vessels. Its largest client is the state-owned petroleum giant Pemex, but the company has global aspirations, aiming to become a world leader in shipping via its commitment to safety and efficiency, but also to environmental and social responsibility. All of Marinetech’s fleet sails under the Mexican flag, which adds value according to the nation’s national content requirements.
JB del Golfo, the third company in Grupo Marítimo M’s portfolio, combines onshore and offshore catering services with employee lodging through its hospitality division. The company’s food services include 24-hour cafeterias, special event catering, and on-demand buffets. Employees who stay in JB del Golfo’s corporate housing are treated to special events, hotel-style cleaning services, and fitness centers.
Expanding horizons
Going forward, Marítima Internacional is well positioned to grow alongside Mexico’s oil and gas industry, which is reaping the benefits of the country’s recent energy reforms. The legislation was designed to spark private energy investment in the country, and though it is too
early to declare the program a total success, experts are cautiously optimistic.
One major facet of the new law is a series of auctions for new E&P contracts in the Gulf. Marítima Internacional has been involved from the start, participating as a shipping agent and logistics provider with companies awarded contracts in early rounds of the Mexican National Hydrocarbons Commission’s (CNH) bidding process. The company expects to be a major player in each subsequent round of bidding, acting as a key component of each successful bid’s feasibility.
However, Marítima Internacional is also looking beyond Mexico. In the coming years, the company also plans to be a ship agent and logistics provider in Colombia and the United Kingdom, guaranteeing ongoing growth for this experienced leader in the exploration and production field.
