Great Lakes Logging • Expo Edition 2025 more Michigan-sourced lumber
projects.
“Certifications are very costly,
and they consume a lot of time
in the factory and a lot of lumber.
So, fortunately, now we’ve got
that hurdle behind us, so now we
can do projects in the future in
Michigan with Michigan wood
much more effectively,” Vaagen
explained.
He added that the project proves
that Michigan can stand out in
the industry as a source for mass
timber.
“I think it’s important to point
out that we didn’t just do this proj-
ect so we could deliver a project
to Michigan; we did this to prove
that Michigan could source mate-
rial for the mass timber industry,”
he said.
Walbridge Assistant Project
Manager Jason Kuckuk and Clark
Contracting Series Estimator
Project Manager Nate Gabel
spoke about how their respective
companies brought the building
to life.
Clark Contracting served as a
subcontractor for Walbridge.
Kuckuk explained the project’s
challenges, including the distance
from Vaagen in Washington State
to the job site in Newberry in the
Upper Peninsula (approximately
1,800 miles).
Both Kuckuk and Gabel said
there were multiple hands in
the project, but they all worked
together in harmony to get the
project completed.
After the panel, guests got a
chance to ask questions, includ-
ing one person who asked what
the steps are to get mass timber
produced in Michigan.
“We’re proving that we have
the demand in Michigan and
the Great Lakes region and
across the country to support
production here. Our team at
MassTimber at MSU has con-
ducted a supply chain analysis
and demand survey that we’re
continuing to expand upon. So
if prospective manufacturers
would like us to present that to
them, we’re happy to do it. And
we basically, at this point, need
someone to decide to do it and
make the investment in setting
up mass timber production in
Michigan,” Lupien said.
