PT4UPM Part FOUR Anne Smith no. 517377
The aim of exercise 4.2 was to make a series of three circular tondi depicting a domestic interior scene in any size using any surface. The medium was imposed and was colour pencils. I used Derwent ‘Inktense’ - which are water- soluble - and ‘Lightfast’.
I initially worked on two concepts:
1. A series on breakfast related to my circumstances; i.e. dual citizenship and loads of time spent in
hospitals due to poor health.
2. A series of life snap-shot that could be interpreted in either a positive or a negative way
I selected the second concept because it better expressed my chosen theme; i.e. how the meaning of information is influenced by the context in which it is presented.
I realized two series of drawings using different styles.
First Series
I focused primarily on technical skills. I used the following working process:
1. Tonal study of each image
2. Colour study of each image to select my colour schemes. I paid particular attention to the way the
colours can be used to create an ambiguous feeling
3. Handrawn the main outlines with a mechanical pencil
4. Creation of my tondi using Derwent ‘Inktense’ pencils. I made use of the water-soluble nature of the
pencils
5. Adjustment of the colours in a digital environment using Procreate
6. Correction of my tondi
Second Series
I wanted to explore a more graphical approach using colour pencils based on Virginia Verran painting style. I used the following working process:
1. Study of a few Verran’s tondi to define the main features of her style
2. Initial sketches in Procreate (Digital drawing) to develop my idea
3. Selection of colours
