“Ineed to keep my medium and form of expression simple.
I like drawing because it provides the possibility and potential of conveying
so much with so little. I use charcoal in different forms–pencils, sticks, pow- der. I like the feel of direct contact of charcoal to paper. Its versatility to be as fine as a crowquill pen line or smudged with the softness of a lithograph print, is very appeal-
ing. Charcoal also likes to play in wa-
ter. So, mostly I begin my drawing with sketches of the human figure or parts of it drawn from life placed randomly on the paper. From there on it’s a process of a collaborative exchange between me and the evolving image. I search for the con- nective tissue, the relationships between the figures in an intuitive and uncon- scious way. My intentions are not known to me while working or afterwards. The drawing has a life of its own. At a certain point conscious choices are made to im- prove composition or whatever demands attention.”
