Blum’s layered arrangements
of ink-washed, wax-infused silks are rooted in modern painting techniques yet activated by the experimental manipulation of his media.
The sheen of the silks lends an air of refine- ment, while the encaustic layers build up depth to the surfaces, amplifying the sug- gestions of space, light, or the sea. Blum uses beeswax as a resist for the ink, building up color in select areas, allowing the ink to pool and flow. While Blum initially dictates the guidelines for each piece, he permits the forms to settle into something of their own creation, a transformation that removes the work from Blum’s preconceived intentions.
