 Afeeling of not belonging has
overwhelmed Chang since
her childhood, one spent navigating politically conflicted locations as a queer
teen. As a result, the repetition in her work of a checkered transparent background resonates: "It belongs nowhere, ex- ists in a non-space. It is the bare minimum of a file, it is where everything starts, it is the tiny bits of root under the duck- weed, it is the reassurance that the state of transparency and newness is a necessity, it is the existence of absence." This transparency conveys the urgency of having to identify with an era of global influences and growing immigration.
