“Ireally enjoy the process and the tactile nature of printing, but
when I no longer had easy access to a
darkroom, I began this Common Threads series of repurposing ‘old’ prints into mixed-media works. Since I’m shooting more
digitally these days, creating and assembling a work of art in this way satisfies that desire to construct—arranging, rear- ranging, measuring, marking, punching holes, taping, gluing, and finally threading the piece. I prefer to keep the string intact for as long as I can so that a piece might only be made up of five or six long strands. To do this, I have to stop inter- mittently to pull the thread section by section. When I thread the work, it is upside down so I only have a vague idea of the final design the thread will take. I could plan this out, but I like this element of surprise. I plan to continue experimenting with this process and see what takes shape over time, shoot- ing intentionally instead of relying on discarded prints, and experimenting with different types of thread."
