“The process began with the loom;
by working within strict sets of rules I learned to create woven cloth through exploring the permutations of woven structure. However, by preparing the loom to create composition through overlapping structure and color, I was drawn to understanding the binary sys- tem of threads raised and lowered. As we are surrounded by fabric at every moment of our lives, there is a direct correlation of woven cloth to personal and social identity. This exploration led me to create these small studies in fully understanding structure and color. I began to draft diagrammatic drawings and models of woven structure from multiple angles, utilize found fabrics that exemplify the diagrammatic image, and think more abstract- ly by using embroidery, pastel, and collage. I believe that this collection of studies moves beyond just exploration of craft to represent instead, a raw understanding of pattern and textile structure as composition.”
