“For some time now, my paintings have dealt with imagery of organic
matter, speci cally plants.
My connection to all things botanical was not born out of a particular love of plants, as I am an indifferent and casual gardener. I see the garden as a metaphorical space, one that represents a cyclical or circular view of life. In the garden, loss and renewal coexist as part of a harmonious interplay. It is here that I nd a connection between the garden’s life and my own.
These paintings were inspired by the discovery of a series of mechanical drawings made by my late father, who was an engineer. After replicating his mark making with his stencils and templates, I respond with my own intuitive marks. From this engineering matrix and after much trial and er- ror, botanical forms emerge. I like the idea of natural forms being created from complex and nely calibrated events that are subject to random and unpredictable forces and changes.
I am interested in the paradox of making plans in a world that promises only variability. The impulse to restore balance and order is strong while remaining a eeting and often unobtainable goal.
The paintings are executed in acrylic on archival wood panel with collage, pencil, ink and silkscreen.”
