“Analytical figure drawings, starting from skeleton to
musculature to skin layover,
are intuitive, as is getting the illusion of spatial depth correct as I play with contrast, variety, line depth, and mass. The focus for me is conveying an emotion in the figure’s form, shape, and action.
I often reference a live model for inspiration when cre- ating a figurative sculpture. I am grasping measure- ments and creating a convincing silhouette, sketch after sketch, in different poses, in an effort to capture the essence of the spirit I am seeking to sculpt. These drawings are my starting point. The human form dic- tates the shape of my creation, but then as I move to the stone in which I am carving this also influences the shape as well.”
