“Ialways thought that the best abstract art should refer to the physical world in some way,
but cool minimal and geometric forms did not con- vincingly de ne real objects and space. In recent years I’ve embraced contemporary symbols, like the grid, which has become a platform for much of my work. I’ve also learned that expressive marks and painterly qualities can bridge the gap between pure abstraction and realism, relating sterile geometry to the human experience.”
