“We live in a world of flux and migration.
Over thirty million people are currently displaced and that only includes the ones who were forced from their homes by strife. If one were to expand the view to include the ongoing rural-to-urban migrations, as well as the non-permanent forms of migration (the mobilization from seasonal employment, long distance commuters, global trade, troop deployment, and relief workers), it becomes ap- parent that we live in a world where the local has been replaced by the mobile. The ability to be anywhere in the world in a few hours is collapsing our idea of place and community. With greater frequency our relationships and worldviews are mediated by virtual moments, 24-hour scrolling news, and flight patterns. This nomad conscious- ness contributes to the sense of transience and dislocation that is common in our global age.”
