Marriage
1.
The mirror we each hold unburies dead hopes, illuminates rough-stitched wounds.
In translucent dreams of reckoning
and recognitions, we return to the battered houses, berry-stained table over the floor of mud, all god’s soft tissue intact.
2.
The chair holds you, a huge brown hand, as I ride, wave and crest. Your body: earth garden of sun and tears, still-
life woven of spider silk.
Green rushes through necks, burning beautiful.
Breath in a cradle of arms, scorched skulls of consummation.
3.
Light fingers dust on the wind of our gathering years. We have passed through the prism, deep
and unlocked. Worms tunnel through spring, our storied pages are nomads huddled around a stoked, windy fire.
Muuss’ poetry has appeared in numerous journals, including Red River Review, and three anthologies. She has been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes in poetry. She is the author of Over Exposed (JB Stillwater, 2013) and the one- woman show, Anatomy of a Doll. Anatomy of a Doll was named “Best Theatre: Critics’ Pick of the Week” by the New York Daily News and has been performed throughout the US and Canada since 1998.
