With a background in architecture, Masciarelli loosely bases her works on Brutalism, a brief architectural movement of the 1950s–1960s, when the infrastructures of buildings were exposed, the electric wires, conduits, and plumbing part of their aesthetic appeal. In sculptures, Masciarelli enivisons herself as creating imaginary devices and factories.
