BOB ROBERTS--OHIO
My father Robert has lived in my hometown of Cambridge since my parents divorced when I was ten. Having spent most of my life since then on the west coast, it has not been easy to maintain a close and consistent relationship. That changed somewhat when Ryan decided to attend Denison University in Granville, Ohio and Debbie and I bought a retirement home there.
After he retired about 15 years
ago, Dad ran Simmental cattle and
grew alfalfa on his 100 acre farm
between Cambridge and New
Concord. His idea of relaxation was
to put up hay and bushhog weeds.
A few years ago, the farm became
too much so he moved into town.
We knew that being inside during
the pandemic would drive him crazy, but he would have little choice if he wanted to remain safe. We sent him masks, food, and tried to help as much as we could from 2000 miles away.
But he was two steps ahead of us, deciding that he would travel to Granville four days a week, an hour each way, to work on our property. It gave him the chance to ride on our John Deere Gator with his beloved Corgi, Diva, and to stay busy outside. And for us stuck in California, it gave us peace of mind that he was safe and our property was being looked after. Instead of speaking occasionally, we spoke two, three, sometimes four times a week with a common cause.
