The FDCC
Foundation had an
energetic meeting at
the winter meeting
in St. Petersburg and
has several updates to
share.
First, the Barb Currie Scholarship
evaluation process is well
underway. William Toles and
new member Jeanne Loftis have
agreed to co-chair the Barb Currie
Scholarship award for 2024. A
committee of volunteer application
reviewers has been established to
review each of the applications as
they are submitted. Submissions
are due March 15, 2024. The
Foundation is anxious to award a
$10,000 diversity scholarship to a
deserving law student in memory of
Barb Currie.
The Foundation has two upcoming
fundraisers to announce that will
support the Foundation’s many
projects. First, our colleague and
International Defense Counsel
Member Christopher Rodd spent
over 400 hours of his time building
a replica of the “America” which
on August 22, 1851, won the Royal
Yacht Squadron’s 53 mile regatta
around the Isle of Wight by 18
minutes. It was quite a feat for a ship
of its size to be designed and built
and then to compete successfully
against other ships from around the
world. Chris build the yacht from a
kit, hand-cut each of the individual
wooden pieces for the decking,
hand-sewed the sails and the trim,
stained and varnished the hull, and
put the model together to be sold to
benefit the FDCC Foundation.
The FDCC Foundation plans to
auction “America” to the highest
bidder. Plans for the auction will
appear in upcoming editions of the
Friday 5s. The FDCC Foundation is
grateful to Chris Rodd for donating
this masterpiece to the Foundation
and to provide the opportunity of
owning this beautiful work of art to
the membership.
