Asking Basic Questions
We lawyers can use complex words, phrases and questions. It is important to keep them basic so the twines and jury can understand them. This exercise addresses how to ask basic questions.
EXPLANATION
Participants learn to ask basic, simple, easy to understand questions.
EXERCISE
Identify a witness you cross-examined in deposition and describe the case and the role of the witness in the case to the participants. Explain what basic questions are (and aren’t) and have the participants question you (as you role play the witness) using only basic questions.
LESSONS LEARNED
We lawyers deal with complex issues every day. Turning the complex into the simple and turning the simple into simple questions is an art. Simple questions prompt simple answers.
