 Library 2020
The Library has had a busy year with over 500 new books added to our collections. This has been made possible through your wonderful support of the Scholastic Book Club and many kind donations from whanau and the wider community. We also committed to “keeping it local” by spending our annual book budget at Birkenhead retail stores.
This year we built on our existing non fiction collection adding in particular to the Sports and Sporting Heroes categories along with growing our graphic novel collection which now includes reprints of old favourites such as the Babysitters Club, Astrix and the Wings of Fire series all in extremely popular graphic novel format.
We have also developed a new collection specifically focused on Wellbeing. These books have proved to be highly sought after reading material by the children and teachers alike,. We will continue to build on these resources throughout 2021.
Generally classes visit our Library weekly for browsing, reading, and borrowing. During this time, we encourage and support our tamariki to explore different genres of books with fortnightly displays highlighting different areas of interest both non- fiction and fiction. Books are issued for a 2 week period allowing plenty of time to enjoy more lengthy novels or favourites.
The Library is set out to accommodate all levels of interest and reader ability from picture books progressing to emerging readers onto junior fiction, fiction and non-fiction. We also have an increasingly popular section of high interest reference books such as the Guinness Book of Records, sport and gamer annuals along with Lego and Minecraft reference books.
We have also been lucky enough this year to showcase some of the incredible art work the children have undertaken over the year and we look forward to continuing to do this next year.
Thank you all for your continued support, we are fortunate to enjoy such a well resourced Library. It is such a special area for all the children at BPS to enjoy and embodies our “Read to Understand, Read to Explore and Read to Enjoy” philosophy.
