THE CEO’S REPORT
Since assuming the role of CEO of Basketball Western Australia (BWA) in late November, I've had the privilege of experiencing firsthand the passion and dedication of our basketball community.
It's been a great experience to engage with our stakeholders and witness the remarkable progress made in advancing the sport across the state. As we reflect on the achievements of 2023, it's crucial to acknowledge and express gratitude to the BWA team, my predecessors,
the BWA Board, associations, players, coaches, officials, and volunteers for their invaluable contributions.
I extend heartfelt appreciation to our key partners, including the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Healthway, the Insurance Commission of WA, and Venues
West, for their unwavering support and commitment to the growth and development of basketball in Western Australia.
In 2023, one of BWA's top priorities
was advocating for facility investment across the state to address the growing demand for basketball infrastructure. The expansion of facilities is essential to accommodate the increasing number of participants and enthusiasts, making the sport more accessible to all. I'm pleased to highlight significant developments in both metropolitan and regional areas:
The management takeover of Morley Sport and Recreation Centre by
East Perth represents a significant step forward in enhancing facility management and accessibility in the metro area.
In regional locations, notable achievements include the redevelopment of basketball courts at Kalgoorlie
and Boulder Basketball Stadium
and substantial upgrades to
Geraldton Basketball Stadium. These improvements not only enhance playing conditions but also contribute to the overall growth of basketball in regional communities.
Additionally, Bunbury has initiated project management for the construction of a new six-court facility, signalling
a significant investment in basketball infrastructure that will benefit the local community.
The aspirations of BWA to expand facilities have been bolstered by the collaborative efforts of associations, local councils, and government agencies. The strong support received underscores the shared commitment to promoting active lifestyles and fostering community engagement through basketball.
Looking ahead to 2024, BWA remains optimistic about the prospect of further facility investments in high-priority associations. These developments will not only cater to the growing demand for basketball but also serve as catalysts for community development and social cohesion.
In 2023, BWA's exceptional work across various facets of the organisation was acknowledged through a nomination
for the SportsWest - Organisation of the Year. This recognition is a testament to the approach adopted by BWA in advancing the sport of basketball.
The nomination reflects the concerted efforts and acknowledgment of the work across Competitions, Participation, High Performance, Marketing, Association Development and back office support from Operations, Payroll and Finance.
