Keep Eyes Open But Keep Your Distance When You Spot a Moose in New Hampshire
 By Donna RhoDes
NEWFOUND – New Hamp- shire has an abundance of wild- life to see and enjoy, but by far the most impressive is the moose, also known as Alces Americana, which can weigh up to 1,400 lbs. The antlers on a fully ma- ture male reach anywhere from nearly four to seven feet in width. And that is not something hu- mans or even most predatory animals want to take on.
Many visitors ask where they can go to see moose, and really the best answer is “Anywhere!” Twin moose were photographed midday a few years ago crossing Lake St. in Bristol. They have been seen at high noon by the traffic circle on Rte. 3A in Plym- outh and have been spotted all along not only back roads but other busy routes like West Shore Road and Rte. 104. Bogs, forests, and meadows are their preferred

Moose are one of the many beautiful animals who call New Hampshire home, but people are encouraged to keep in mind that they are wild animals and should never be intentionally approached.
males can also protect themselves with their long legs and cloven hooves. In fact, their legs can ac- tually kick in any direction, and they will use that ability to pro- tect themselves whenever neces- sary.
Those legs can also be a problem for motorists. Long legs lift them above headlight beams, and along with their dark body coloration, that can make it hard to see them when night falls. No one walks away a winner when a car hits a moose. Signs posted in some areas warn drivers to be on the lookout, but they can actually be spotted almost anywhere as they search for feeding grounds, in the case of young moose head- ing off on their own, just a new place to call their own.
So, moose do not have photo booths for people who wish to see them, but they are out there. If you are fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time, they are a fantastic sight to be- hold. But when you do spot one, keep quiet, keep your distance and keep your camera ready!
locations, but you never know where they may be next. You just have to be in the right place at the right time.
The biggest problem is when people see a moose, they can get
excited and run towards it, not realizing it’s not one of “Farmer Brown’s” domestic farm animals. Unaware tourists have been seen trying to feed clumps of grass to a massive bull, and families have
jumped from vehicles to race to- ward a moose on the side of the road, all dangerous moves.
Besides male antlers that are shed each winter and grow back in the spring, both males and fe-
