Time to take the scenic route! If you are not in a hurry, instead of taking Route 93 South to Til- ton, consider the “Beauty Way,” a less known alternative to the monotonous view of the high- way. Perhaps 10 minutes longer and an extra mile or two, the Beauty Way has visually pleasing rewards. And, if you’re lucky, you can avoid some Friday night traf- fic heading north as well.
The Beauty Way provides views of distant mountains and nearby hills, ponds, a lake, an- tique houses, historic buildings, farms, and the Pemigewasset River. Along the way, you may want to take a detour described below.
Here’s a suggested itiner- ary. From Lake Street at Bristol Center, turn right onto Central Square and turn left by the Pur- ple Pit down Central Street. Don’t forget to pick up a coffee to enjoy on your trip!
Continue on Central Street over the Pemigewasset River and look to your right to see a parking

area on Coolidge Woods Road. (You can park there or farther up and hike, bike, or paddle by the Pemi.) From there, Central Street becomes Old Bristol Road.
Follow Old Bristol Road four and a half miles to New Hamp- ton. As you travel the hills, slow down and take in the views of Bristol and its surroundings. There will be photo opportuni- ties! At the stop sign, turn left, staying on Old Bristol Road. Through lovely old homes on both sides, merge onto Main Street. On the right is the New Hampton Fish Hatchery. Open all year; the Hatchery showcases trout and salmon that spawn nearby and displays future pro- duction. Kids and leashed dogs are welcome. A visit typically takes a half-hour, and it’s free!
Continue on Main Street, passing the New Hampton School. Founded in1821, the boarding school enrolls 300 stu- dents from around the world. The campusis a blend of charm- ing cottages, Victorians, newer academic buildings, andplaying
fields.
Continue south on Main
Street for 2 miles to Spectacle Pond on the left with a parking area. Fishers catch bass, trout, and perch here. There’s a boat ramp but no beach, but there are some pretty views across the pond. Continue south for about two miles to Hermit Lake. The Sanbornton town beach and raft can be seen on the left as you pass. Don’t forget to open your windows to let that cool air in.
Drive four miles in Sanborn- ton, and find the Surowiec Farm sign on the right. Take a detour and turn onto Perley Hill Road. Admire the 200-degree view north and west! Turn into the Farm where you can buy just- picked vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers. The Farm also has locally produced meat and dairy, so what more do you need? When in season, pick high bush
blueberries and apples. Produce varies by season ( e.g., strawber- ries, pumpkins, Christmas trees), as do the days and hours they’re open. Leave Fido in the car, and stop in to experience a real fam- ily farm. Resuming your trip, you should continue south to the stop sign* and follow Route 132 South through fields and farms to Route 3 in Tilton. Turn right for Route 93.
*There’s a 16-mile R/T de- tour to Steele Hill Resort, where they serve lunchand dinner daily and breakfast on weekends at the Hilltop Restaurant. On the way, linger at the Sanbornton Historic District, which is registered as a National Historic Place. Then, continue upward to the resort, past farms, cows, stone walls, paddocks, and mountain views. Open to the public from noon to 9:00 pm, and on weekends from 8:30 am to 9:00 pm, the Hilltop has a full bar and spectacular views of the Lakes Region and mountains.
