Helping Children Feel Welcome
What amenities might we offer children – something special they might associate with where “Grandma” or “Great-Grandma” lives? Perhaps a dog that lives in the household, a little child-sized desk, a checkers board on the game table, a photo album with pictures of the children and grandparents, an always-full cookie jar, a basket of toys in the living room or a play house in the courtyard.
Community Learning Circle Questions
What ideas do you have for adding special things children might associate with our home and urge them to come visit us?
Realize All Elders May Not Appreciate Children
It’s important to be sensitive to elders who make it clear they’re not interested in hanging out with kids and don’t want them making a lot of noise and disrupting life. Work through these concerns in a way that everyone feels they’re having the life they want. It might mean that on Tuesday afternoon Joe (who says he can’t stand children) goes out of the house or stays in his room. Help him do what he wants. Help it work out for everyone.
