Residents are communally acknowledged and
celebrated at every opportunity for: • gains/progress
• life passages
• losses
• illness and recovery from illness
• return from absences
• the way they look today
• the role they take on in the community • birthdays
• rites of passage within their family
• just coming to a meeting
News and Issues of the Home
Residents are informed about upcoming events and changes and challenges within the operation of the nursing home that affects their lives. This, in turn, gives residents a chance to voice their opinions and empowers them to change what they want in their home.
World News
News of the wider community and the world is announced. The Barkans suggest putting it into a wider historical context residents can relate to, and to identify news and issues that are particularly relevant to them.
Planning the Future
Community Meetings give residents opportunities to help plan activities related to the facility and broader community, like special events, holidays and service to others.
Remembering Residents
The Barkans caution us to never shy away from talking about residents who have passed away, to perhaps hold a moment of remembrance at the Community Meeting in addition to a separate memorial service. The meeting format also includes discussion of residents’ ideas for creating special traditions for when residents pass away.
