Associate Handbook
Employment Status
Employment-At-Will: Associates with The Piper should understand that the employment of all personnel is at the will of The Piper and the particular associate and that the associate and/ or The Piper may terminate the employment relationship with or without cause and with or without notice at anytime. In no case or circumstance should written guidelines, such as this handbook, or policy statements be considered or interpreted to be a contract of employment between The Piper and the Associate.
Recruitment: Applicants will be recruited through job announcements, advertisements, community resources, and referrals. We continually strive to employ the most qualified people for each position. If you wish to refer an applicant or to be considered for a job opening, please direct the inquiry to Human Resources.
Work Year Defined: The term "work year" or "years" relating to policies and procedures or associate benefit information is defined as a continuous twelve (12) month employment period beginning on an Associate's date of hire and ending on the following anniversary of that date.
The first ninety (90) days of employment immediately after hire will be considered an introductory period. Annual reviews will be given on the associate’s anniversary date or promotion/transfer date.
Introductory Period (new Associate): The first ninety (90) days of employment for all new associates of The Piper is considered to be an introductory period. The introductory period is a time for training and evaluating a new Associate. During this ninety (90) day period, each new Associate has an opportunity to demonstrate his/her ability, skills and performance, as well as have an opportunity to discover whether they would enjoy working at The Piper.
The Piper, as your employer, will evaluate your work performance, including attendance, and your ability to work well with others. Termination of employment may occur without notice at any time during this period.Anextensionoftheintroductoryperiodmaybeofferedtoallowanopportunity fortheassociateto demonstrate potential and progress should performance not be at acceptable levels.
During this ninety (90) day period of evaluation, full-time associates are eligible for enrollment in group insurance programs. Medical Insurance benefits are effective the first of the month after thirty-one days for salaried associates and the first of the month after sixty-one (61) days of employment for hourly associates. Other insurance/benefits are effective after ninety (90) days of employment. Introductory associatesarenoteligibleforPaidTimeOff.Aftercompletionoftheintroductoryperiod, theassociatewill be considered eligible for all applicable benefits as a regular associate. The successful completion of the introductory period does not alter the at-will employment relationship.
Work Performance Improvement Period (current Associate): If your performance, work quality, attendance and/or attitude are below satisfactory levels, The Piper reserves the right to establish a work performance improvement period. During this period, you will meet with leadership and establish specific areas to improve performance. Discussion will be made to determine what areas are lacking and what performance goals need to be met by a specific date. If at the end of this period the improvement goals have not been reached, you will be subject to termination. During this established work performance improvement period regular associate benefits, if any, will not be affected.
Associate Classification: The following classifications are in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (Wage - Hour Law) and are applicable to positions held within the Company.
