Sample Policy & Procedure for Promoting Adequate Sleep
Department: Long Term Care TITLE: Promoting Adequate Sleep
 
POLICY
The resident’s usual routine will be supported related to sleeping and arising.
PROCEDURE
1. At move in, the Psychosocial Assessment will include gathering of the following information relat- ed to the resident’s usual routine and preferences:
• Usual time to arise in the morning
• Nap patterns including time, length and preferred location
• Usual bedtime
• Bedtime rituals
• Prefers bedroom door closed or open • Use of night light
• Toileting pattern during the night
2. Care Plan will reflect resident’s preference related to sleeping and arising.
3. In the evening, household staff will assist resident to perform the rituals known to assist the resident to sleep.
4. Lights in the hallways will be dimmed at a time determined by the residents.
5. Residents who enjoy watching television in their bedroom will be asked to turn the vol- ume down if loud enough to disturb resident’s in adjoining rooms. Consider use of head sets for those residents if disruptive to others.
6. Household staff will turn off televisions and radios when the resident is found asleep.
7. Household staff will use a low voice tone when talking to each other in the hallway or in a resident’s bedroom after residents have gone to bed.
8. Residents will be asked if they want their door shut when their bedtime ritual is complet- ed. If two residents share a bedroom, check with both residents. Close bedroom door if both agree.
9. Household staff will make rounds at least once an hour after residents are in bed for the night.
