Phill Matson with Life Memberships
Phill Matson was born, raised and schooled in Hull in East Yorkshire. He completed his primary honours degree in human biology at London University before gaining a Ph.D on ovarian function in the golden hamster in the Faculty of Medicine of that institution.
During that time, he also worked at Kings College Hospital and Medical School in London.
In January 1985, he began a two-year contract as
senior reproductive biologist at PIVET in Perth working with John Yovich. As a measure of the success of this collaboration, Phill and John generated 30 peer reviewed publications.
Phill then returned to the UK to assume senior positions in Manchester including Honorary Research Fellow in the University of Manchester Department of Pathology.
His achievements and awards during that time included:
• committee positions with the British Andrology Society including General Committee, Education Sub-Committee, and Treasurer;
• Foundation Chairman of the Association of Clinical Embryologists (ACE), the UK’s equivalent of SIRT;
• Establishment of the UKNEQAS Andrology External Quality Assurance Program; and
• Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in the specialty of reproductive science.
In 1995 Phill moved back to Perth where he remains. He held key positions in a number of ART clinics along with the Perth Zoo. Most recently he served as Professor of Human Reproduction at Edith Cowan University.
During his time back in Australia Phill:
• Chaired the Scientists in Reproductive Technology (SIRT) professional group and edited its newsletter;
• served as a council member of the FSA and member of the NHMRC Embryo Research Licencing Committee;
• set up an Australian Andrology External Quality Assurance Program; and
• conducted numerous national semen analysis workshops.
He has been a prolific investigator with his work appearing in 200 peer-reviewed publications. He has made around 50 presentations at scientific meetings and 100 posters at scientific meetings.
Phillip Matson
Phill Matson is a superb reproductive biologist and a good friend to all. He has freely shared his knowledge, experience and advice being a diligent mentor of scientists seeking higher degrees and young scientists researching and presenting data.
He has given sterling service to both SIRT and our Society, most recently through a highly competent term as chair
of RTAC.
Phill said he was thrilled to receive Life Membership for his professional efforts, but also recognising the many people with whom he has worked and formed close friendships.
