Therefore, current standard surgical treatment of endometriomas carries the caveat of further contributing to the fertility burden of patients in whom ovarian reserve might already be compromised.
This patient-blinded randomised controlled trial aims to evaluate the effect of a novel surgical technique using vasopressin hydrodissection in laparoscopic excision of ovarian endometrioma on ovarian reserve, as measured using serum Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) compared with the conventional technique of “ovarian stripping”.

We hypothesise that the vasopressin hydrodissection technique is associated with less blood loss and diathermy events. This effectively reduces thermal damage to ovarian follicles, therefore resulting in less mean relative decline in AMH in the post- operative period compared to the control group.
We are enormously grateful to the FSANZ Research Grants Committee for funding our project, the finding of which may refine the treatment of this highly relevant condition.
And in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list ...
Three Australian high achievers in the field of assisted reproduction recently became proud recipients of Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Emeritus Professor Alan Trounson was honoured as an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to medical science and to in vitro fertilisation and stem cell technologies.
Professor Trounson was an early leader in the development of sustainable IVF in Australia and a driving force in pioneering IVF research in Melbourne in the 1970s with a particular focus on optimising fertilisation and embryo development.
He was the former Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash Medical Centre and Scientific Director of Monash IVF. Professor Trounson also served as a distinguished scientist with the Hudson Institute of Medical Research and he was President of the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine.
In 2004, Professor Trounson was honoured with Life Membership of our Society.
Former Fertility Society President, Vice-President and Secretary, Dr Leon Clark, became a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to medical administration and to health care delivery.
He was National President of the Australian Private Hospitals Association and established the Australian IVF Directors’ Group serving as its chairman and later receiving the IVF Director of the Year Award. Throughout his medical and administrative career, Dr Clark has been instrumental in improving quality in health care and consumer empowerment.
He was a leading figure in lobbying to obtain Medicare item numbers for IVF making the procedure more affordable for people living with infertility.
Current FSANZ Board member, Professor Beverley Vollenhoven, was honoured as a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to tertiary medical education and to obstetrics and gynaecology.
Currently Professor and Acting Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash University, she has held key roles with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and with Monash Medical Centre and the University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida.
Professor Vollenhoven was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2019 for her instrumental work in ensuring access to critical reproductive and women’s health services in Victoria.
