Colossians 1:16 ‘For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.’
We read and hear a lot about young people at this time. Have you ever heard or
even maybe spoken the words ‘the youth of today are...’, followed by a whole lot of negativity? I have heard those words many times, and I have always prioritised seeing the best in our young people, encouraging them, and bringing out the best in them.
I have regularly been found fiercely advocating for young people and trying to get others around to see the best in them.
On Sunday night, I attended a celebration service at Balaklava Uniting Church to witness the baptism of one of our students, as did several of our staff. What struck
me that night was the passion in that room coming from between fifty and sixty teenagers. It was so refreshing to see this passionate bunch of teenagers worshipping and praising God. It gave me great hope for the future and great delight to witness this amazing event. Of course, in our college, there are many instances of students doing things that make my heart fill with pride, and I am often left thinking of the great future that many of our students will have.
On our recent camp to Kangaroo Island, it was delightful to observe some students helping out with cooking and other duties. Many times these students were not asked to do so, which was great to see. Another thing that impressed me during the recent camp was the number of students who thanked other staff or myself for organising or supervising the camp, either verbally or in writing.
Now, more than ever, our young people need to be loved, encouraged, built up, and given firm boundaries. The Bible has a few things to say about this.
1 Timothy 4:12 ‘Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.’ Proverbs
22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it. Romans 12:9-10 ‘Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil; cling to what is
good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honouring one another.’
Ephesians 6:4 ‘Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up
in the training and instruction of the Lord.’
