  FOREWORD
Between 1924 and 1926 the Fire Underwriters’ Association of South Australia produced a series of detailed maps of the main business district of Adelaide. These maps were an update of a similar series produced between 1911 and 1914 which can be seen at the State Library of South Australia.
In this book, each of these maps are divided into six sections, showing in detail the businesses and dwellings of each street, as well as providing some insight to the architecture and features of each property.
To accompany each of these maps, the facing pages show photographs of street scenes, businesses and people from within, or adjacent to, that map.
Many older photographs of Adelaide can give the impression of a city without people. Photography at that time required slow shutter speeds, leading to people showing movement blur. Consequently, many formal photographs of streets and buildings were taken at times when the streets were quiet. In this book, every effort has been made to depict scenes with a strong human element.
Also shown on the facing pages are advertisements from the Sands and McDougall Directory which relate to businesses shown on that map.
A number of caricatures from a 1933 publication Men of South Australia are also used.
Street numbers appear to have been altered from time to time. Numbers on the maps do not always correlate with those shown in photographs or Sands and McDougall directory excerpts.
The majority of photographs used in this book are copied from originals sourced from antique dealers or donated by people and organisations acknowledged on the rear inside cover. Photographs have not been digitally enhanced and the scratches and marks of a long life have been left unretouched.
