THINGS TO
HELP YOU RELAX
No one is immune to stress. Even your yoga instructor has stress. You may feel it’s easier said than done to “just relax.” But lessening stress actually can be easier than you think, and, in some cases, even fun.
COLOR ME HAPPY
Adult coloring books is one of the only growing categories in publishing right now. It may seem silly, but the reason for their success is because it offers a fun way to unwind and relax. Not feeling the crayon craze? No worries, there are many more fun ways you can conquer your stress.
PUMP UP THE VOLUME
Listening to our favorite music makes us happy. In fact, studies have shown that music improves the body’s immune system functions and reduces stress. In some cases it has been more effective than prescription drugs to reduce anxiety. So crank it up. Whether it’s on the way to work or after a long day, turn up the volume and feel the beat. A 3-minute song may be all it takes to take your mind off your daily worries.
DON’T FORGET TO BREATHE
Performance’s Dr. Susann Clothier says breathing exercises are one of the best
ways to reduce stress. “If you’re short on time, take 5 minutes of your day to sit somewhere quiet and focus on your breathing. Taking deep breaths in and out with your eyes closed, maybe along with some light relaxing music, is a powerful technique to relaxing. But be sure to focus on making sure the breath is coming from the diaphragm and stomach and not the chest or neck.”
MOVE IT
Move it or lose it is a powerful motto. If you don’t move your body you lose muscle and momentum. The more that happens the harder it is to get moving again and less movement equals lesser quality of life. Exercise boosts your feel-good endorphins. When you feel good, you stress less. Find what form of exercise gets you going. Whether it’s a solo run, yoga or you prefer group sports, don’t wait. Get moving, and your mind will thank you for it.
