Katelyn Shaw Continued from previous page does not get to spend too much time
with them outside of racing, since they
live in different states. Growing up, her
parents always encouraged her and her brothers to be the best they could in whatever they set their minds to, which is a mentality that they all live by on and off of the race course.
As a kid, Katelyn played with both dolls and cars, but working on the race boat with her brothers and her dad always was a favorite.
Her favorite restaurant is Below Deck and she hopes to be able to travel to the Mediterranean...preferably on that mega yacht! Her favorite holiday is Christmas. She loves everything about it; The holiday cheer, getting together with family, and of course, presents!
Something most people don’t know about Katelyn is that she uses ra- dios in her boat (even though she is not required to do so) to help her with the flag colors since she is color blind.
As a special education teacher in a 7th grade classroom, Katelyn teaches math and science and loves being able to incorporate racing into her lessons. Her colleagues think she is crazy and her students love asking questions about racing--- sometimes, to avoid doing work, but mostly because they think it is pretty cool.
Katelyn’s long term career plan is to stay in the classroom and teach meaningful life lessons to as many students as she possibly can. Of course, she would not pass up retiring and travelling the world as a living.
When she is not racing, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, travelling, and being out on the water. She takes every chance she can get to spend time out on a boat!
If they made a movie of her life, she would want someone who looks good in a racing suit and lifejacket to play her... and that is not easy!
There are many people that Katelyn idolizes in boat racing. Duff Daily and Paul Fitzgerald have been great mentors to her and she definitely would not be as successful without them. Her favorite racer of all time will always be her dad. He has always supported her on and off of the water regardless of how she finishes or what her starts looked like. He has also helped the sport as a whole in so many different ways and always exhibits true sportsmanship.
