In addition, improvements to the District Wide Area Network were proposed that will help in plan- ning for the future. The District Wide Area Network with recommended enhancements is detailed in the following two diagrams. These diagrams detail the existing District WAN and the recom- mended enhancements to the District WAN. In summary, the recommended improvements to the District Wide Area Network are:
• Install a fibre line from Central Office to the Notre Dame Elementary School;
• The Mackenzie River and St. Dominic Elementary Schools should be connected to the Assumption Jr/Sr High School, not DSI;
• The connection from Bonnyville to Cold Lake should be to the Assumption Jr/Sr High School, not DSI;
• Install Ethernet (10base2) outside cable from Assumption Jr/Sr High School to the Deputy Superintendent’s Office; and
• Install a Firewall between the Assumption Jr/Sr High School and DSI for the Internet uplink.
3. OUR DISTRICT TECHNOLOGY VISION AND GOALS
3.1 Developing the District Technology Vision
Our challenge is to seek ways to enhance and improve student learning and achievement in an increasingly technological world. The demand for serious educational change combined with the dramatic increase in the availability, quality, and power of Information Technology have simultane- ously grown into two of the most significant trends in education today. Too often, educational change and information technology implementation occur separately with little coordinated plan- ning and little impact on student learning and achievement.
Our challenge is to link educational change and Information and Communication Technology imple- mentation for high impacts on student learning and achievement. Driving such a challenge must be a clear vision of the future.
The plan then becomes our road map to our vision of the future. To create our education and information technology vision there are a number of sources that can help including:
• our District Mission Statement;
• our District Vision Statement;
• our District response to the education and information technology directions provided by Alberta Learning's 2000/2001 to 2002/2003 business plan ;
• the experience and knowledge of District staff;
• what the research says; and
• Alberta Learning Technology curriculum, other developments and funding.

NOTE:
Any major changes in the Wide Area Network should be taken cautiously and in consultation with Alberta Learning as the Alberta Government may be announcing a major development for the implementation of a high-speed telecommunications network infrastructure in Alberta. This network would be built over the next three years and could potentially save school districts considerable dollars.
