The APHIS proposal won’t prevent disease outbreaks, but it would allow animal health officials to more quickly identify at risk ani- mals and areas and act to contain outbreaks before they can do substantial damage to the cattle industry. It would also reduce the num- ber of producers impacted by an outbreak, al- lowing producers outside identified risk areas to continue marketing their animals as usual.
Now more than ever Washington’s leaders and citizens understand how critical the food system is to our state’s health and economy. As the agency charged with supporting Washing- ton’s diverse agriculture industry, WSDA will continue to look for opportunities to assist the livestock industry. We look forward to working with you to weather our current challenges and prepare solutions to help with challenges to come in the months ahead.
