Brazilian Government Renounced to Reform Pensions
The government of Michel Temer desisted from carrying out his announced Pension Reform, his biggest economic project for this year, which earned him a threat to reduce the rating of Moody’s.
The law, unpopular according to the polls and reason for the union’s rejection, was buried after the government admitted not having two thirds of the Chamber of Deputies to approve it and chose as a priority the military intervention in Rio de Janeiro.
The financial market awaited this project as the most important for reducing the fiscal deficit since Temer assumed the presidency in 2016. Authorities of the rating agency Moody’s said: “While we expected that a broad reform was unlikely, abandoning the plans to approve is negative for the country’s credit profile, since it will restrict the ability of the authorities to meet the ceiling of spending on the next few years,”.
To avoid further disillusionment from investors, the Brazilian government launched a series of economic initiatives, such as the privatization of the electricity giant Eletrobras, the simplification of the tax system and a new regulation for the autonomy of the Central Bank. (See page 15)
Chile: Real Estate Brokerage
Unanimously, the Chamber of Deputies approved the creation of a regulatory framework for real estate brokerage. This, with the aim of raising the standards of training and suitability that the public expects in this type of intermediation.
The motion, sent to the Senate at the second step, will regulate an activity in which more than 15,000 people participate, that is currently oriented mainly by market guidelines.
The project defines the real estate brokerage, while determining who can devote to that profession. A relevant subject of the initiative, which required the sponsorship of the Executive for its organization, is the creation of an Electronic Registry of Property Brokers, of a public nature, in which all persons, natural or legal, who exercise the activity will be noted, provided they comply with the provisions of the law and its regulations. The Registry will be administered by the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism.
