STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE Research Administration SOP No: A008
SOP Title: Unfunded and Underfunded Research
1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this standard operating procedure (SOP) is to describe the standard procedures to be followed for appraising the financial viability of the research portfolio, and utilizing resources to institute pathways for research determined to be unfunded or underfunded considering the cost to resource and the research merit and alignment with our mission.
2. INTRODUCTION
The advancement of medical knowledge through clinical research is a core mission of Children’s HealthSM. In support of this mission, Children’s Health will support research designed to improve the understanding, prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of childhood diseases. In particular, as in previous editions of this request for proposals, Children’s Health Foundation seeks to provide initial funding for innovative research ideas with high potential for sustainable extramural support in the future.
Funding provided by Children’s Health Foundation will be awarded following a rigorous Peer Review process conducted by the Children’s Research Advisory Committee (CCRAC). This process is intended to identify the most meritorious and innovative projects that support our aim of improving child health across a wide range of disciplines. In extension of this initiative, internal funds can through similar process supplement underfunded research or sustain the progress unfunded research in a Mission Review. The Children’s Health Foundation encourages applications from all areas of scientific and clinical inquiry.
Applicants fall into one of the following categories: Fellow, Early Career (new applicants and resubmissions), or Senior Bridge. Each category has a different application and review timeline.
3. SCOPE
This SOP applies to Research Administration and those whose interest it is to sustain their unfunded or underfunded research through application and use of internal funds.
4. RESPONSIBILITIES
4.1 Research Administration (RA)
Where RA is not responsible for the study budgets, RA is responsible for evaluating the financial viability of the research portfolio determining unfunded and underfunded research. Every effort to communicate to the stakeholders regarding the expiry of funds, inadequacy of funds, and possible avenues to secure internal resources to promulgate their research informing toward the Mission Review should be made in consideration of the timeline to apply for instantiating funds. RA is responsible for working with applicants to guide them through the application, review and award process.
