Farms can give their sheep Byboost during droughts to ensure they get the necessary minerals and vitamins they wouldn’t otherwise get due to a shortage of quality feed.
for sheep
Bayer Animal Health’s Baycox and Byboost have helped this Eastern Cape farmer through tough times. That’s why he can’t
Mrecommend it enough for other farmers.
r Butch James (not the fontein Agricultural College in 1968. rugby player) farms with “I started farming in 1969, meaning sheep and cattle near I have been on the farm for 50 years! is especially useful when you must wean lambs. You can put the lambs in the field and give them a dose of Byboost. The lambs will get all the vitamins and mine- rals they need. That is a very good start.
“You can already see in the first week of the animal’s life that he got something to give him a proper boost. “
Butch also gives the ewes Byboost before the mating season and he says the results are visible.
“There are cheaper products on the market that I have used, but it doesn’t contain all the minerals the animals need. You only get them in Byboost.”
BAYCOX
Butch puts the sheep on pastures when they are lambing. Otherwise, he puts them in camps where he can feed them granu- lated fodder.
“We need the Baycox product when the sheep are on the pastures, as they can get coccidiosis, leading to diarrhoea. As soon as we can, we give the lambs a dose of Baycox.
“What I like about the product, is the fact that you only need to give it once and it lasts for a lifetime. It is an expensive product, but definitely worth using.”
Butch says he would definitely recom- mend Baycox and Byboost to other far- mers.
“If you have lambs and sheep on pastu- res, you have to give them Baycox against coccidiosis.
Byboost is a big help on the farm in times like these when water and feed are scarce and the animals are struggling. It gives the animals more energy and they are not as lethargic as they normally are in such conditions.

“I farm with Santa Gertrudis cattle
and Merino sheep. Sheep are however the main branch. Over the years we have bred a sheep with a good build. We sell our ewes as needed and deliver excellent quality wool.
“We have approximately 300 cattle, in- cluding cows and calves. During the lam- bing period we have about 6 000 sheep on the farm. That includes lambs, because lambing for the season has just finished.”
BACKGROUND
Butch is the fifth generation on the farm. His family has been farming in the Cath- cart area since 1872.
He matriculated in 1966, did his military service in 1967 and studied at the Groot-
“We are now back to where we were about 20 years ago. That’s a bad thing. We don’t have feed for the animals on the farm. Our water is also running out. Roughly 40 ha of pastures have gone to waste, because we can no longer irrigate it.
“I feed the sheep granulated fodder, but because of load shedding it is difficult to get this kind of feed, as the factories cannot manufacture it. It is one problem on top of the other,” says Butch.
GETTING A BOOST
However, Byboost is a useful product to use in your management programme in this difficult, dry circumstances.
“Byboost is fantastic during droughts. It gives the sheep an extra boost, just like the name of the product says. The product
