ROUTINES
It’s time to get up My morning routine in in in in our camper van starts with boiling water for the morning coffee Then I put on on my training clothes with down clothing on on top to to keep warm When the the the the water has boiled I make my coffee scrape the the the frost from the the the window and wake up Kilian Kilian Kilian Kilian is my partner both in in in the mountains and at home home We have parked our mobile home home in in in a a a a a a a a a a a a mountain mountain pass about 3000 metres above sea level close to to Leadville in in in Colorado US US We had the the opportunity to to stay in in in the the the US US after a a a a a a a a a a a race in in in San Francisco and wanted to to take the the the opportunity to to explore some mountains in in in in in Colorado on skis and at the the the same time train for the the world cup in in in in in in in ski ski mountain- eering It looks like it’s going to be a a a a a a a a a nice day day After breakfast our training day day starts As I I have two racing seasons each year one one season season season running and one one season season season ski ski mountaineering I I I am almost entirely ski-borne six six months a a a a a a a year the the other six six I I I I only run It’s December now and I’m skiing The first training session of the the the day is a a a a a a a a a a long one We always start at the the the same time to see how the the the the snow conditions are are at the the summit we are are headed for for I finish train- ing ing one hour before Kilian and and return earlier to the the the van By then it’s warm and and welcoming When the the the sun is shining it it it it heats up so so quick- ly as it’s so so small! Eight square metres with everything you need: bed table and kitchen I I stretch a a a a a bit in in in the the warm sun before I I go in- side to fto heat up the the the leftovers we are having for for lunch lunch As Kilian washes the the the dishes after lunch lunch I have a a a a a a a a cup of o of coffee while looking out out of o of the the the small window at the the the big mountains outside There are only a a a a a a a few hours between the the first and second training sessions but in in in this lim- ited space there is is not much else to to do than stretch out on top of the the the bed and and just be be After lunch and and and a a a a a a a a a rest we do the the afternoon session prepare dinner have a a a a a a a a a a cup tea and and then it’s time to to to go to to to bed again It’s so very easy to to to to to to live this way Nothing Nothing to to to to to to worry about Nothing Nothing to to to to to clean no no bills to to to to to pay no no Internet to to to to surf The only things we need to to to think about is food heating and getting today’s work done THE SIMPLE
It may not not be be be optimal for an an elite athlete to to to live in in in in a a a a a a a a a a a camper van to to to to to be be be be cold to to to to to not not not being able able to to to to to shower after training to to to to to not not even be be be able able to to to stand upright at home But for a a a a a a a limited amount of time it it it it is is still so very worth it it it it though it’s not a a a a a a a a five-star hotel This simple life makes me realise what is is is really important: to be warm enough get food for the day and do something I I enjoy I I guess that is basically what most people strive for? Something we have had inside us us for for for thousands of years that we forget while stressing about choosing
The simple the the predictable and the the unknown are three key phrases that I in in some way way always strive to to to combine Two of them are the the exact opposites but I do my utmost to to to try to to to strike a a a a a balance between them DECISIONS 31
