SMITH STANISTREET & CO/ CALCUTTA/ TREBLE AERATED
In 1821, a small apothecary’s shop was opened at 1 Radha Bazar Street, Calcutta, by surgeons S. Robinson and James Williamson but a change in ownership in 1826 brought Dr John Smith and then in 1844 Dr Thomson Dowson Stanistreet and the name Smith, Stanistreet &
Co. They seem to have had an existing business Smith & Stanistreet
in 1817. The firm moved to Lall Bazar in 1844 and later to Dalhousie Square. This building was at one time the Viceroy’s Residency and housed the aerated-water factory, manufacturing laboratories, and extensive stores. At least two sizes of these blue Hamilton’s are known, this being the larger.
