Mitchells & Butlers Brewery was formed when Henry Mitchell’s Old Crown Brewery, founded in Smethwick 1866, merged with William Butler’s Brewery, also founded in Smethwick in 1866,
in 1898.
Henry Mitchell moved to the Cape Hill site in 1879 this became the company’s main brewing site boasting its own rail network connected to the National railway system. As with most companies there were various take overs/ mergers along it’s chequered past, merging with Bass in 1961. Under the ownership of Coors the brewery closed in 2002 and production moved to Burton
on Trent. The old site is now a housing estate.
