BUCHANANS BLACK & WHITE WHISKY
James Buchanan was born in Canada in 1849; his parents returning to Scotland in 1850. After a short period there the young James was raised in Northern Ireland. Aged 15 he joined a Glasgow shipping firm as office boy then went on to gain 10 years experience in his brothers grain business.
In 1879 he became a London agent for Charles Mackinlay & Co, the Leith whisky blender and after just 5 years set up his own London business. His first customer was Dolamore Ltd a respected wine and cigar merchants. Initially trading in casks of whisky he was quick to see the potential for a quality blended, bottled whisky. Initially known as House of Commons (after the British House of Commons) its nickname, referred to the black and white labelling eventually adopted as the official brand. The brand’s motif, a black Scottish Terrier and a white West Highland White Terrier, was conceived by James Buchanan during the 1890’s.
